Island Cleanup Event Saturday, April 20th , 10 AM to Noon
Spring is here, Earthday 2024 is approaching, and it is time to give our island a springtime cleanup boost! Winter storms have again brought interesting but unwanted items to the beach wrack lines. Roadside ditches and public areas have attracted unwanted litter. Join your island friends and neighbors and contribute 2 hours to this worthwhile event.
There are two ways to participate:
- Meet at the Schoolhouse Park at the corner of Edens Road and Guemes Island Road at 10 AM. Volunteers can then select their assignment from a list of designated beaches and roadways. Trash collection bags will be distributed. Skagit Public Works provides a limited number of long-handled tongs to make picking up litter a bit easier. Bring your own work gloves, tongs if you have some, and water as needed. You will be given a phone number for truck support to aid in bringing all collected trash back to the park by noon.
OR
- You may choose instead to clean your own beach or roadway. If you need trash bags or tongs, you can obtain them at the park beginning at 10 AM. You may also use your own trash bags.
All collected trash and borrowed tongs must be brought back to the park by Noon on April 20 th . If you need assistance getting the trash to the park, please call (360) 826–2714. All trash collected will be removed from the island by Skagit Public Works at no charge to islanders.
2 hours times 30 sets of hands = 60 hours of cleanup…. 2 hours x 40 sets of hands = two work-weeks of cleanup…, 2 hours times 50 enthusiastic bodies equals……you get the idea….. YOU are important to the success of this annual event!
This event is hosted by Groundfloor Guemes, a committee within the Guemes Island Community Center. Participation in this event can be credited for Community Service Hours. Further information can be requested through myguemes.org or by contacting (360) 299-3230.
