Guemes Island Ferry Trail Update July 2020

Hello valued trail supporters. We have great news!

First, we want to say that we missed seeing all of you at the July 4th picnic in the park this year. That’s always such a fun time for us to greet and thank our supporters and share our trail updates. Second, we want you to know that although you may be out of sight during the “Safe at Home” Public Health campaign, you’re definitely in our thoughts. We wish you well and hope that we can all gather again soon.

Although COVID-19 prevented our monthly face-to-face trail committee meetings the past several months, our work continues and progress is being made. We are excited to share that we now have signed legal agreements for trail access from 2 of the 3 private property owners along the route and the third agreement is nearing completion. In addition, SWITMO (Skagit- Whatcom-Island Trail Maintaining Organization) has generously offered the services of their excavator and operators to help with trail construction. We’re working closely with the County to get permits before construction can begin. We would be thrilled to be able to start shoveling in the next few months (TBD).

Once again, we thank you for your generous donations and ongoing support. It’s been a long, slow process but we hope you’re as excited about our latest progress as we are.

We also want to thank Skagit Land Trust and Jack Hartt, in particular, for working directly with the private property owners and their legal teams to secure the access agreements. Jack has also been instrumental as a liaison with Skagit County Parks and Recreations and the Public Works departments. Our thanks to these County organizations as well.

If you’d like to donate, checks can be mailed to Guemes Island Library, 5293 Guemes Island Road, Anacortes, WA 98221. Please add 'Guemes Trail Project' in the memo field. To donate online click here. We thank you in advance for your tax-deductible donations.

Your continued support keeps our spirits high and fuels our perseverance. We can’t do it without you!

With gratitude,
Guemes Island Ferry Trail (GIFT) committee
