GUEMES ISLAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY

August 13, 2018 (business meeting)

Present: Tom Deach (pres), Janice Veal (treas), Carol Deach,  Dave & Shirley Margeson, Al & Nancy Bush, Bob Anderson, Carol Harma, Sue O’Donnell (sec)

Show and Tell: Bob Anderson brought a great “find” from his collection of sign boards.  At some point, he surmises, someone brought him some scrap pieces that were stacked along with others in his studio.  This past week, he realized he had 2 halves of an old sign – “HOLIDAY HIDEAWAY – ON GUEMES ISLAND VIA ANACORTES”.  He cleaned up the pieces and brought the bright yellow sign to the meeting.  Nancy & Al remembered the sign at the real estate “office hut” on the Anacortes-side ferry dock.    Annette Bessner Mitchell and Mick Allen had plans to bring the hut to Guemes. The small hut is now in the yard of the Zehner house on Guemes.

Nancy brought a Christmas card from Barbara Spaeth with picture of her Seaway Hollow beach cabin.  Barbara is remembered as a t.v. news reporter and eventually married to Earl Cahail of the pioneer Guemes family.

Carol Deach had been to Jack Smith’s Estate Sale and found a framed picture of the Blackinton house.  Also a drawing done by Jack at the beginning of his artistic career.

Treasurers Report - (attached)

Current bank balance is $35,216.31 (which includes $94.80 income from recycled cans and $17 from “Sally’s Flowers” sold at ice cream social).

Historical Society has 2 Certificates of Deposit at Washington Federal; as of July 9, 2018 one CD is valued at $2228.22 and the other at $2287.96.  One of the CDs matures this month.

For purposes of record keeping, Chair of the Guemes Island Historical Society was Winston Anderson when the 2 CDs were purchased.  Since then the chairmanship has changed twice.  Carol Shoultz Deach followed Winston Anderson; Thomas Deach followed Carol Deach and was elected Chair at the regularly scheduled meeting of May 8, 2017.

This brought up a discussion of investing some of our funds.  Al Bush will look into the possibilities.  Bob suggested we look into how other Historical Societies might invest.  Janice will contact Bret Lunsford to find out the investment strategies of the Anacortes Historical Society.

BUSINESS MEETING

During discussion of the treasury, the topic of an Historical Museum was raised.  Negotiations concerning land purchase have been under way.  Tom, mindful of the interest some members have in investing treasury funds, suggests we keep $5000 liquid.

Final discussion of details to make the Annual Dog Show (D.I.D.D.O.S.D.S.) happen!!!

August 18, 10am – 2pm.  The committee of  TOM!  has organized the society to make it all happen!  Registration, set-up (tents, chairs, tables, B-B-Qs, ice chests, recy, garbage, hand wash stations, etc.), greeter, cashiers, signage, schedule of events, change, food purchaser, food preparers, food service ($5/person), water for dogs, music, historical displays, art participation table, Cypress Island Cruise sign-ups, silent auction, auction descriptions, judges, parade, halftime “demonstration” event, participation ribbons, awards, many faithful volunteers, wags, woofs and fun, fun, fun!

The 2017 D.I.D.D.O.S.D.S netted $1423.49 for the Society.  Fire department will be asked to power wash the pavilion floor and to move the very heavy table onto the grass.

History closet – we continue to collect “artifacts-all-Guemes”.  Storage space seems to be diminishing!  A few decisions were made concerning state of storage and planning for future acquisitions.  Carol Harma volunteered to finish the storage of the 1990 storm pictures and documents we displayed at June ice cream social.  This is an ongoing discussion . . .

Recent Storage Opportunities:  Minutes of the Guemes Island Fire Department meetings (November 1960 – present); 1990 storm documents; donated quilts; documenting equipment; photos, books, etc.  It all just keeps coming!!!  These treasures require better storage.  Society is working toward this goal.

Coming Events:

CIRCLE CYPRESS ISLAND CRUISE – Friday, September 14, 5:30 – 9pm; an historical look at Cypress Island, delicious dinner and dessert.  Tickets on sale at Dog Show, $100/guest.
