Remembering Iris Sherman
May 29, 1922 - June 8, 2018

Iris Sherman and lifelong friend Marvin Shoultz 2017.

Iris Sherman passed away June 8th 2018 at Rochester Washington. She was born May 29th 1922 to parents Wade and Ruby (Goings) Forrester in Annawalt, West Virginia. After moving to Guemes Island, she attended the Guemes Island School as well as Anacortes High School. She lived in Stayton, Oregon for 29 years and later moved to Rochester where she lived close to her son Martin.

Although she lived away from Guemes for most of her life, she called it “her island,” Iris often spoke of her many island friends, with whom she shared the beaches and their numerous adventures. Iris was a wonderful storyteller and writer. She participated in the Guemes Island Historical Society's “Growing Up Guemes” program with several of her childhood friends at the age of 94 to share her childhood memories with our community.
Iris was witty, charming and had a keen sense of humor. She never failed to see the beauty around her and retained a childlike exuberance for the smallest of things she saw. Her smile and enthusiastic zest for life was contagious.
