What Do You Do If Your Car Stalls On The Ferry?

On February 14, 2015, LineTime asked Captain Rachel Rowe, Guemes Ferry Operations Manager:

I witnessed an event on the ferry last Sunday that I'm hoping you can clarify, for me and others, especially if a change in a long-standing practice has been made.

Unable to start, a Prius and its driver rode back and forth on the ferry for four hours while they waited for AAA to assist. I was told that the ferry had a new policy of not jump starting vehicles because of the risk of damaging electronics. I was also told that the crew attempted to jump the car but that the attempt failed. What did happen? Is there a new policy regarding assisting cars on the ferry that won't start?

On March 25, 2015 we received the following response:

We do not have a written policy on this matter. If a vehicle is broken down onboard, the responsibility ultimately is with the owner of the vehicle. The ferry crew is under no obligation to re-start vehicles that have broken down. Further, if a broken down vehicle is obstructing traffic, the owner is responsible to make arrangements for getting the vehicle towed/moved. If the owner refuses to do this, we will contact the Sheriff's office to assist.

I hope this helps to answer your question.

Sincerely,
Captain Rachel Rowe
Ferry Operations Division Manager
