Immerse Yourself In Puget Sound!

Become a WSU Beach Watcher!

Love beaches?  Want to learn a ton?  WSU Beach Watchers are professionally-trained volunteers dedicated to protecting Puget Sound’s fragile environment through education, research and personal example.

The 100-hour WSU Beach Watcher training is being offered in Skagit County based at the Padilla Bay National Estuarine Reserve. The course will be split between spring and fall. Spring classes will run April 6 through April 30 on Tuesdays and Fridays, 9AM – 4PM. Fall classes will run September 7 through October 1 on the same days and time.  It includes expert presentations, field trips and hands-on practice in: coastal processes, marine organism identification, marine birds, public education, scientific monitoring, restoration practices, and so much more!

In return, Beach Watchers continue learning while volunteering at least 100 hours over two years as citizen scientists, educators and project planners.   A few examples of WSU Beach Watchers projects are organizing an evening seminar series, doing interpretation at public parks, monitoring beaches for water quality, crabber education and much more.

Class size is limited so apply now.  The application deadline has been extended to Friday, March 19.

For an application or more information, contact Chris Betchley, WSU Extension / Skagit County at (360) 428-4270, ext 223 or christineb@co.skagit.wa.us.
